What is an end user license agreement?

An end user license agreement (EULA) is a contract between the licensor of a software application and a user who purchases that software from a retailer. It usually comes as a digital click-through, where the user has to agree to a number of terms and conditions.

Usually, these terms impose restrictions on how and where the software can be used as well as on the degree to which the licensor can be held liable for any damages on the end user’s hardware resulting from using the program.

Some software is barred from being sold and used in specific regions of the world. This often applies to video games and is due to some versions being banned from specific countries due to different censorship standards. By including language reflecting this in an end user license agreement the licensor protects themselves legally in case a consumer violates these laws.

End user license agreements are often lengthy and written in a highly specific legal language which makes it difficult to give informed consent.
